ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to investigate fitness indicators through cardiac stress test in post-COVID-19 athletes, who were not hospitalized, vs healthy ones. Forty male professional Greek soccer players, were divided into two groups: previously infected with COVID-19 and non-hospitalized (n=20, Age: 25.2+/-4.1 yrs, BSA: 1.9+/-0.2 m2, body fat: 11.8+/-3.4 %) vs. control (n=20, Age: 25.1+/-4.4 yrs, BSA: 2.0+/-0.3 m2, body fat: 10.8+/-4.5 %). Inclusion criteria were: age >=20-to-<=30 yrs, training age >=6 yrs, without recent injury (>12 months) and asymptomatic infected with COVID-19 (<7 days). For each athlete, prior to assessment cardiopulmonary function (CPF) were recorded body composition, spirometry and lactate blood level. Differences between groups were assessed with the independent samples t-test (<0.05). Several differences were detected between the two groups (COVID-19 vs. non-COVID-19 athletes, Table 1) during CPF. Results didn't showed differences between groups in VO2max (55.7+/-4.4 vs. 55.4+/-4.6 ml/min/kg Table 1. Results between groups (*p<0.05, #p<0.001) Post-COVID-19 athletes characterized by increased respiratory work at both rest and maximum effort as well as hyperventilation during exercise, which may explain increased metabolic needs and mechanical stress.

ABSTRACT

Wastewater-based epidemiology during the COVID-19 pandemic has proven useful for public health decision-making but is often hampered by sampling methodology constraints, particularly at the building- or neighborhood-level. Time-weighted composite samples are commonly used; however, autosamplers are expensive and can be affected by intermittent flows in sub-sewershed contexts. In this study, we compared time-weighted composite, grab, and passive sampling via Moore swabs, at four locations across a college campus to understand the utility of passive sampling. After optimizing the methods for sample handling and processing for viral RNA extraction, we quantified SARS-CoV-2 N1 and N2, as well as a fecal strength indicator, PMMoV, by ddRT-PCR and applied tiled amplicon sequencing of the SARS-CoV-2 genome. Passive samples compared favorably with composite samples in our study area: for samples collected concurrently, 42 % of the samples agreed between Moore swab and composite samples and 58 % of the samples were positive for SARS-CoV-2 using Moore swabs while composite samples were below the limit of detection. Variant profiles from Moore swabs showed a shift from variant BA.1 to BA.2, consistent with in-person saliva samples. These data have implications for the broader implementation of sewage surveillance without advanced sampling technologies and for the utilization of passive sampling approaches for other emerging pathogens.

ABSTRACT

Simultaneously occurring bilateral herpetic keratitis is a rare clinical manifestation of ocular herpes. Immunocompromised patients are more susceptible to develop bilateral disease. The purpose of this study is to review recent literature on the topic and to highlight latest updates, regarding risk factors and possible correlations to the disease, as well as new therapeutic options.

ABSTRACT

Sustainable Urban Development Observatory of Thessaloniki (SUDOTh) started operating in the first semester of 2020 with the objective to promote territorial evidence in policy making in urban governance. SUDOTh was developed as part of the Sustainable Urban Development Strategy 2016-2023 of Thessaloniki Metropolitan Area to address the need to obtain, observe and monitor how complex urban functions interact, at a territorial level, with product development (or lagging) effects. In the first year of operation, the Observatory had to set, test and evaluate the system of indicators and indexes it uses. Initially the system was formed in 4 basic sections: 1. Territorial Development and Urban renewal, 2. Urban Mobility, 3. Environmental Conditions and 4. Social Conditions. An extra set of indicators for Urban Governance was also developed. The process of data collection, test and evaluation of indicators was eventually coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic. This situation influenced deeply several urban functions as well as the data collection methodology. The first results and conclusions from the first year of the operation of SUDOTh are presented and discussed further in this paper.

ABSTRACT

The current COVID-19 pandemic has boosted a sudden demand for telemedicine due to quarantine and travel restrictions. The exponential increase in the use of telemedicine is expected to affect ophthalmology drastically. The aim of this review is to discuss the utility, effectiveness and challenges of teleophthalmological new tools for eyecare delivery as well as its implementation and possible facilitation with artificial intelligence. We used the terms: "teleophthalmology," "telemedicine and COVID-19," "retinal diseases and telemedicine," "virtual ophthalmology," "cost effectiveness of teleophthalmology," "pediatric teleophthalmology," "Artificial intelligence and ophthalmology," "Glaucoma and teleophthalmology" and "teleophthalmology limitations" in the database of PubMed and selected the articles being published in the course of 2015-2020. After the initial search, 321 articles returned as relevant. A meticulous screening followed and eventually 103 published manuscripts were included and used as our references. Emerging in the market, teleophthalmology is showing great potential for the future of ophthalmological care, benefiting both patients and ophthalmologists in times of pandemics. The spectrum of eye diseases that could benefit from teleophthalmology is wide, including mostly retinal diseases such as diabetic retinopathy, retinopathy of prematurity, age-related macular degeneration but also glaucoma and anterior segment conditions. Simultaneously, artificial intelligence provides ways of implementing teleophthalmology easier and with better outcomes, contributing as significant changing factors for ophthalmology practice after the COVID-19 pandemic.

ABSTRACT

Coagulopathy has recently been recognized as a recurring complication of COVID-19, most typically associated with critical illness. There are epidemiological, mechanistic and transcriptomic evidence that link Selenium with SARS-CoV-2's intracellular latency. Taking into consideration the vital role of selenoproteins in maintaining an adequate immune response, endothelial homeostasis and a non-prothrombotic platelet activation status, we propose that impairment in selenocysteine synthesis, via perturbations in the aforementioned physiological functions, potentially constitutes a mechanism of coagulopathy in COVID 19 patients other than those developed in critical illness.
